The mission of 14plus1, a not-for-profit organization, is to advocate for the abandonment of female genital mutilation (FGM). We educate people about the severe harm to women and girls from this dangerous procedure. We also work for the well-being of survivors of FGM. We are committed to protecting the rights and health of women and girls, ensuring they live free from violence. We strive to create a world where every individual is valued, respected, and able to thrive.
History and Significance of Our Name and Logo
14plus1 was born out of my personal history and my dedication to protecting my own children and the children of others. We became a formal not-for-profit organization in 2024.
The 14 is to honor my sisters and me for surviving FGM, as we all underwent this procedure. The +1 is for the girl named after me whom I was not able to save from FGM. My own story became her heart-breaking story.
I began advocating against FGM when my children were born over 30 years ago. I also advocated against FGM to my mother when my children and I visited her in my native country, Mali, in 1995 and 1997. I subsequently organized my first anti-FGM community awareness event in 2000 in Bamako, the capital of Mali. I have organized and personally funded many such events through the years.

The future
